1. Keep a close eye on your coolant levels to prevent engine overheating.

Cars rely on the cooling system to prevent engine overheating, no matter the weather condition. In these scorching temperatures, keeping a close eye on your coolant levels is especially important to prevent breakdowns. You should also watch out for puddles in your driveway to identify if you have a coolant leak.

2. Try your best to park in the shade, and use a sun reflector when you can’t.

To keep your car looking shiny and new, try to minimise parking under the hot sun. Car paint and plastic trim can crack and fade when left in the sun due to oxidation. If you need to pack under the hot sun, use a sun reflector to keep your interior cool (-er) and prevent damage to plastic fittings and electronics.

3. Check your tyre pressure weekly.

Ensure your tyres are properly inflated, as under-inflated tyres will produce more friction on the road, leading to an increased heat buildup and higher likelihood of failure. Take care not to over-inflate your tyres either, as this leads to uneven wear.

4. Have your car serviced regularly.

One of the best things you can do for your car is ensure it is serviced according to schedule. Among the main functions of engine oil is reducing friction in your engine and drawing heat away, which is vital to prevent overheating and engine damage.

Regular service ensures your engine is not suffering from dirty, ineffective engine oil, which also wears down pistons, reducing your overall engine lifespan.

5. Check on your battery health and fluid levels.

Hot weather is generally bad for car batteries. Consistently exposing your battery to extreme temperatures will shorten the overall lifespan of your car battery. To prevent being caught out with a dead battery and car, it is recommended to regularly check on your battery. Ensure the battery water levels are sufficient if you’re using a wet cell battery, and clean off any deposits on the terminals.

Additionally, check on the levels of the other fluids in your car, which are vital to ensuring a smooth, incident-free drive.

6. Get your air conditioning serviced if necessary.

No one wants to be stuck in a baking hot car with no air conditioning. If you feel that your car’s air conditioning system is not functioning as it should, it is better to get it looked at sooner rather than later. Some of the signs of imminent failure also include:

  • Loud noises
  • Cabin temperatures higher than usual
  • Bad smells

Don’t forget about your cabin air filter too! A dirty filter inhibits air flow, besides potentially circulating mold spores and bad odours.

Don’t neglect your car service in this scorching weather! Maxx ‘N Go is here to help take care of your car, while you stay inside in the soothing air conditioning. Our services come with FREE fluid check and refill, plus we can replace your cabin filter.
